Go further with food during National Nutrition Month

Whether you’re starting your day or work week off with healthy meals or preparing for a business trip or sporting event, choosing foods wisely and planning ahead make a difference.

Go Further with Food is this year’s theme for National Nutrition Month®. Thinking about what you eat and planning for your meals to go further can help you stay healthy both in your waistline and in your pocketbook.

The following tips can help make your food go further.

Eliminate waste
Before heading to the grocery store, take an inventory of food you already have. Consider what you need to eat first and what you can mix with new items. If you have vegetables that you haven’t eaten, why not combine them for a delicious stir-fry? Trying to finish up that aging celery? Just cut off the brown edges of each stalk and dip it in almond butter. If your bananas are starting to brown, add them to a smoothie with spinach and nuts. Do your best to buy only what you plan to eat. Remember to properly store or freeze items that can be cooked or re-heated at a later time. And remember to always use good food safety practices.

Healthy eating on the go
Establishing a routine is often the first step in starting a healthy habit. Planning and prepping your meals gets you in the right mindset and helps set you up for success. But what happens when your routine is thrown out of whack—you have to go on a business trip, for example? Or what if your day turns upside down and you have to make quick choices that you didn’t plan for?

Making healthy choices doesn’t have to mean being on a strict diet, and it doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing scenario. Try to make a healthy choice no matter what you’re facing. If your lunch meeting is at a burger joint, choose to skip the French fries and add some raw vegetables to your plate. Be mindful of your portion size, too.
