A good time for preventive care

The new plan year for HealthSelect of Texas participants started September 1st. This is a great time to make an appointment for yourself and your family to see your primary care provider (PCP) for a yearly checkup. Be sure to ask your doctor about any recommended screenings or immunizations. Don’t forget that most preventive care is covered at 100% with no cost to you!

What is preventive care?

Preventive care is health care that has been proven to be safe and effective in the prevention of disease. It can also help find health problems early when they can be treated. Routine preventive care may also help you save money by avoiding costly health care services in the future.

Some forms of preventive care are age and gender-specific. These include routine checkups, screenings and even most vaccinations. Your health care provider can help you decide which screening might be right for you. Based on your age and gender, your doctor might suggest screenings for conditions including diabetes, high cholesterol, prostate cancer (men), cervical and breast cancer (women). Vaccinations are recommended to prevent common and easily spread illnesses like the flu, chicken pox, shingles, measles and pneumonia.

How to know what is covered as preventive care

Your HealthSelect of Texas plan covers most routine preventive care at 100% when received from a network provider. This means you pay nothing out of pocket. You can find more details about covered preventive screenings and immunizations for adults and children at www.healthselectoftexas.com in the “Publications and Forms” tab.
