Medical ID Card Basics
When you enroll in a HealthSelectSM medical plan, you usually get your new medical ID card in the mail in seven to 10 business days after the date your enrollment is processed.
Providers may ask to see your medical ID card when you are getting health care services. It can be helpful to have your medical ID card with you.
New ID cards are not mailed out automatically every year.
You will receive a new ID card if:
- you are a new participant,
- you are a current participant and you change plans,
- you are a current participant and you change your name or
- you are a HealthSelect of Texas® participant and your primary care provider on file with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas has changed.
Quick Tip: You can register for Blue Access for MembersSM with your medical ID card. Download the BCBSTX App to register and access a digital version of your ID card and save it to your digital wallet.
Note: If you are enrolled in HealthSelect of Texas or Consumer Directed HealthSelect (in Texas), your ID card will show the acronym HME (see above). This indicates that you are in the HealthSelect network. It does not mean you are in an HMO. If you are enrolled in HealthSelect Out-of-State or Consumer Directed HealthSelect (Out-of-State), your ID card will show the acronym PPO which refers to the broader PPO network in other states. If you are enrolled in HealthSelect Secondary your ID card will show the acronym TRAD.
Pharmacy benefits ID cards are provided by your prescription drug benefits plan administrator and are separate from medical benefits ID cards. It can be helpful to have your pharmacy benefits ID card with you when you pay for prescriptions at the pharmacy.
