How to get care
There are many types of mental health providers that offer a range of mental health care. You can decide what plan is best for you:
- You could start by talking about mental health with your primary care provider (PCP). Your PCP may help you find mental health support nearby, suggest a mental health provider or prescribe medication.
- Counselors, therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists all may offer mental health care, but only psychiatrists or mental health nurse practitioners can prescribe medication. That’s one of the reasons why talking to a PCP first can be helpful—some people may want to work with more than one provider to come up with the best course of action.
If you have questions about your HealthSelect mental health benefits, need help finding a mental health provider in the network, or have questions about a mental health claim, call a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) Personal Health Assistant.
