Every year, the flu causes illness, hospitalization and even death.
Not only does having it feel awful, with fever and chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache and runny nose, but it can have dangerous complications like pneumonia and heart attack.
Many people could be protected from serious illness if more people got vaccinated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you get a flu shot in September or October before flu season is in full swing, as it takes about two weeks for protection to develop.
It’s particularly important to reduce complications for those with a medical condition (such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes) or who are younger than 5, older than 65, pregnant or immunocompromised.
Where can I get a flu shot?
If your agency or higher education institution does not schedule an on-site vaccination clinic for employees, check with your primary care provider (PCP) about getting your shot at his or her office, or visit an in-network pharmacy or retail health clinic such as those located in a grocery store.
Flu shots are covered at 100% for HealthSelect of Texas® medical plan participants, including ConsumerDirected HealthSelectSM, when you see an in-network health care provider. Remember, if you’re enrolled in HealthSelect of Texas, you must have a PCP on file with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) to get in-network benefits.
Flu shot recommendations are based on age and health conditions, including pregnancy and certain chronic conditions. Ask your PCP if you have questions about whether you should get a flu shot.
HealthSelectSM plan participants who need help locating in-network providers can call BCBSTX and speak with a Personal Health Assistant toll-free at (800) 252-8039 (TTY: 711), Monday–Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. CT.
