Get convenient, quality care, anywhere

Illnesses and injuries can happen when you least expect them. Whether it’s after your doctor’s office hours, on the weekend or on the road, you want access to immediate, cost-effective care. With your HealthSelectSM medical plan, all you need is a smartphone to access medical and mental health care through Doctor On Demand® and MDLIVE®.

Whether you are at home or on the go, virtual visits give you 24/7 non-emergency care from a board-certified doctor by phone, online video or mobile app from almost anywhere.

A doctor in your pocket

Julius, a HealthSelect of Texas® participant, decided to take his son Eli camping for a weekend of father-son time. They arrived early to set up their tent and gather firewood, then they set off to fish at a nearby river.

When they returned hours later, Eli began complaining about his legs itching. Julius saw that his son had a rash spreading around his ankles. Julius had brought a first aid kit with bandages and creams but wanted to get a medical opinion before doing anything.

Julius knew he had access to medical Virtual Visits, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Before the trip, he had downloaded the app to his smartphone and set up his account for one of the two Virtual Visits provider options. He had even checked to make sure he had phone reception at the campsite, just to be safe. With this prepared in advance, all Julius needed to do was pull up the app and request a video call appointment that would be covered at 100% by his medical plan.

Within minutes, Julius was connected with Leah Martinez, M.D., and he was able to use his phone’s camera to show her the rash. The doctor diagnosed Eli’s rash as an allergic reaction and confirmed it was not a medical emergency. She also let Julius know the over-the-counter cream in his first aid kit was safe to use and should help relieve Eli’s discomfort until they made it to a pharmacy to pick up the medication she prescribed.

While their camping trip was cut a bit short, Julius now had peace of mind knowing Eli was going to be all right.

Along with medical and mental health virtual visits, you may have access to telemedicine through your primary care provider. Call yours to ask if they offer care via a telemedicine platform. Through telemedicine, you pay the same for in-network medical and mental health telemedicine visits as you would for in-person office visits.

If you have questions about Virtual Visits or telemedicine, call a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas Personal Health Assistant toll-free at (800) 252-8039 (TTY: 711), Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Saturday, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. CT.
